I would like to work in sports, especially golf, so I was really excited to speak to Jack and hear about his position with one of the top golf media outlets in the world, while gaining some insight as to how he got there as a Penn State graduate. Golf is obviously a major part of his life, as he is a player and coach, and both his parents work in the industry.
One part of our conversation that surprised me slightly was his discussion of his remote work. I would've thought his job could be done remotely, but it was interesting to hear that both he and others he works with decided to go much further than the New York office of GOLF.com. To me, it was another example of how there are some jobs available that are remote. It definitely seems as though some organizations are going in a more remote direction following the pandemic, and seeing how well Jack and other GOLF.com staff appear to work, I understand how it is possible.
I absolutely loved to hear about and related to the travels Jack discussed, and it's part of the reason why I would love to work in golf. In my own internship with the American Junior Golf Association, I saw so many courses in so many states, and Jack is certainly beginning to do the same often. I feel more confident in my desire to work in golf, as the idea of traveling being part of work is just one of many reasons why that desire is as strong as it is.
While I have worked in golf, my position was slightly different than Jack's. Writing articles was included in my responsibilities, but I obviously was not the editor of a magazine, so it was really interesting to hear from Jack about that. Even though Jack's position was slightly different, it appeared as though so much of what appealed to me about working in golf was present in Jack's role, including the travels, and just being surrounded by the game.
Moving away to a faraway location as part of my post graduate plans is certainly something I am exploring, so I enjoyed hearing slightly about how Jack began his career in Oregon. There are obviously so many opportunities available throughout the country, and going back to traveling, it's exciting to hear about the unique experience of someone who made a long journey following graduation. Hearing how well it worked for Jack, and how his Oregon TV experience still serves him today gives me confidence that no matter where I end up, the experiences will still be great.
